The ELIXIR.NO project

The project is coordinated by the University of Bergen and includes the Universities in Oslo, Trondheim, Tromsø and Ås. It receives funding from the Research Council of Norway through its research infrastructure program and is also supported by the participating institutions. The project officially started October 1st 2012. It builds on a ten-year long collaboration between Bergen, Oslo and Trondheim operating a technology platform for bioinformatics supported by the FUGE program. The project aims include

  • to build a Norwegian Node in the pan-European research infrastructure ELIXIR (www.elixir-europe.org), with the Node delivering services and resources to the international community through ELIXIR on selected areas;
  • to continue a National help desk serving users a broader set of services and assistance; and
  • to provide an e-infrastructure allowing users to efficiently and safely store, share, analyse and publish their genomics scale data.

The countries that have signed the ELIXIR Memorandum of Understanding and are thereby taking part in the ELIXIR interim phase.

In 2013 ELIXIR will be established as a European research infrastructure, with a collaboration agreement being signed by at least five European governments. This is the result of a large amount of work over many years including a EU funded preparatory project (ending in 2011) and an interim phase from 2011 until today.

ELIXIR will be organized as a special project under EMBL – the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – and the ELIXIR head-quarters will be at the EMBL-EBI, the European Bioinformatics Institute situated in Hinxton near Cambridge, UK.

Countries that are members of ELIXIR will establish national Nodes. The Nodes will each be providing resources and services together making up the offerings of ELIXIR as a whole. The University of Bergen coordinates an initiative to form a Norwegian Node – ELIXIR Norway – and the ELIXIR interim board has recommended the Norwegian Node application to be approved once ELIXIR is operational and includes Norway as a member.

Current activities
